Ecopix photographer Wayne Lawler has been up to his neck in the Gulf Country rivers and wetlands, trying to catch some of the fleeting action which goes on daily in these productive ecosystems.

It mostly happened while he was still getting the lens cap off, but he was lucky with some, so here's a sample:

Abandoned oil field in the middle of a conservation reserve, Florida s310406   Out of sight, out of mine!

On a more serious note, the mining industry is in the news again. While we all need the products of mining (where would this page be without silicon?), its past speculative nature has left the industry with a legacy of environmental damage and bad blood. While the modern industry presents its case for responsible environmental management and land rehabilitation in words and pictures, illustrating the errors of the past for a balanced report is not so easy.

Many abandoned sites are in remote locations, often what are now conservation areas. Photographer Rick Sheremeta came upon a classic case recently - an abandoned oil field in the middle of the Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, now regarded as an important part of America's natural heritage.

These pictures of past errors, and those below by EcoPix from other parts of the world, show why the present emphasis on environmental planning before, during and after mineral exploration and mining is necessary. This is an important modern social issue, and EcoPix can illustrate it for you.
